Altars are an essential element of the Day of the Dead celebration. In this traditional Mexican holiday, altars serve as a way to welcome and honor the departed.
Every year, the Latin American Coalition and the Levine Museum of the New South host an altar competition, open to individuals as well as groups. These altars showcase the creativity of the artist, while also having some traditional requirements – earth, wind, water, fire, marigolds, skeletons, photos, and grooming items.
There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner selected by a juried panel and a popular vote winner.
If you would like to apply to create your own altar, please fill out an application and send it to Lucila Ruvalcaba here
