Protect immigrant families facing deportation.
IMMIGRANT FAMILIES AFFECTED BY I.C.E NEED OUR HELP!
Charlotte’s immigrant community is under attack. In February 2019 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) started massive street operations in the North Carolina counties, especially where the Sheriff’s offices ended cooperation with ICE. In one week, ICE cruelly arrested over 200 of your neighbors and community members while also emphasizing that these raids are “the new normal”. The majority of the ICE raids occurred in places of business and factories, removing hard-working, law-abiding immigrants. In some cases, ICE removed the sole financial provider of the family, leaving spouses and children with no means of survival. The traumatic events are leaving lifelong scars on family members wondering if they will ever see their loved ones again.
Why this Cause
Families that have to face the horror of deportation have several challenges, a language barrier that leaves them vulnerable, a lack of knowledge on how to navigate the immigration system, the need for legal representation, and the need for funds to pay the bonds when their loved ones are released from detention centers in Atlanta, GA. Families are facing a crisis today when the main provider who supplies 80% of the family income is grabbed by ICE. Not only is the remaining parent stressed with trying to reunite with their spouse, but now has the added burden of choosing whether to feed their children or paying rent so they keep a roof over their heads. The compounded emotional and psychological hardship is too much for one person to go through alone.
This is why we, at the Latin American Coalition created a Family Defense Network. A connection of volunteers, allies, and organizations that help us support these families in crisis. The most urgent need is financial support to cover legal fees and travel expenses to assist these families. Bonds starting at $5,000 and the cost of attorneys are the most important factors preventing deportation.
