Olma Echeverri, originally from Colombia, South America, embarked on her American journey in 1970 with the pursuit of education. Over the past 15 years, she has been a stalwart member of FLXON, Inc. in Charlotte, serving as the Manager of Support Systems and International Logistics.
Olma’s dedication to community service is evident in her involvement in various impactful roles. She played a crucial part in the Hispanic/Latino Advisory Committee for Joe Biden’s Campaign and is currently a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
Having attended the Latin American Leadership Future Search Conference, Olma was elected Co-Chair of the Civic Engagement Committee. The committee actively engages in Get Out The Vote (GOTV) initiatives, contributing to the increased participation of Hispanics in exercising their voting rights.
Olma’s leadership extends to political and community organizations. She served as the President of the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County for two terms, overseeing one of the state’s largest chapters. Additionally, Olma is a member of the Multicultural Advisory Board at Providence Day School, where she later became Co-Chair.
A trailblazer, Olma holds the distinction of being the first Latina in North Carolina elected to the Democratic National Committee. Her commitment led her to attend the Democratic National Conventions in 2008 and 2016.
Olma’s extensive community involvement includes past roles as State Chair of the Hispanic-American Democrats of North Carolina and Co-Chair of the Greater Charlotte U.S. Army Advisory Board. Her contributions were recognized with the 2005 Campeón Award by the Latin American Coalition for efforts to register Hispanic Americans to vote.
In her professional journey, Olma worked for 25 years alongside her husband in the family textile business while raising four children. She holds an Elementary Teaching degree from the Normal Nacional de Señoritas in Manizales, Colombia, an Associate in Arts Degree from Central Piedmont Community College, and pursued studies at Furman University and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
An unwavering advocate, Olma is actively engaged in immigration issues, including her support for the DREAM Act and House Bill 11. Her activism has garnered recognition from the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County, and a Lifetime honorary membership of the Teen Democrats of NC.
Believing in building bridges across communities, Olma collaborates with other communities of color, including African and Muslim communities. Beyond her activism, she enjoys reading, writing opinion columns, and spending cherished moments with her family, particularly her four granddaughters and one grandson.
